‘Maths’ is a correct term
01.13.05 (4:44 am)   [edit]

I TAUGHT English for many years and I can only say that if I was not proficient in the language I would have been relieved of my duties. I concur with Sze Gin (Jan 6) that if a teacher is not completely proficient in English that he/she should not be teaching English.

It is shameful that even The Star, as well as other businesses, seem to refuse to check their English before publishing. Lay persons can be excused for making mistakes. However, shame on the Government, schools, businesses, etc, for not checking properly for the correct English. It is disheartening to see signs around Kuala Lumpur with incorrect spelling and incorrect English usage.

I often see on TV publishers advertising their books on mathematics using the term “maths”. Textbooks published in the US do not use that term, and most likely will tell you it is wrong. Further, any native English-speaking person will tell you that it is wrong.

Throughout the world we use the term “MATH”. For example, “Have you done your math?” “Do you like math”? “I am doing my mathematics”.

I have taught mathematics (math) for many years in the US and I never saw the word “maths” or ever heard anyone use that term. I never saw this term used in the UK or in any other part of the world.
– Ed Symonds, Kuala Lumpur

Ed: It is not true that “maths” is not used in the UK and other parts of the world. The Collins and Oxford dictionaries, just to name two, define “maths” as being the same as “mathematics”. Just go to a search engine and type the word “maths” and you’ll also find the term used on many UK websites. Just a few examples: www.nrich.maths.org/public/index.php (University of Cambridge project) www.bbc.co.uk/education/mathsfile/in dex.shtml (BBC, which runs ‘The Maths File Game Show’) www.mathsrevision.net/gcse/index.php (GCSE Maths revision)

“Maths” is also used in New Zealand (see www.nzmaths.co.nz). And in Australia (see www.teachingtreasures.com.au/maths/Maths_more.html).

Even in France (see www.maths.net).

In Malaysia, which adheres to British English, “maths” has been in use for as long as I can remember.

2004 Indian Ocean earthquake
01.13.05 (4:35 am)   [edit]
The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was an undersea earthquake that occurred at 00:58:53 UTC (07:58:53 local time) on December 26, 2004. The earthquake generated tsunamis that were among the deadliest disasters in modern history. At a magnitude of 9.0, it was the largest earthquake since the 9.2 magnitude Good Friday Earthquake off Alaska in 1964, and tied for fourth largest since 1900.

The earthquake originated in the Indian Ocean just north of Simeulue island, off the western coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The resulting tsunamis devastated the shores of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, and other countries with waves of up to 15 m (50 feet) high, even reaching the east coast of Africa, 4500 km (2,800 miles) west of the epicenter.

At least 159,700 people are known to have died as a result of the tsunamis and the count is still taking place. The true final toll may never be known due to bodies swept out to sea, but it is likely to be higher than the current estimate. Relief agencies warn of the possibility of more deaths to come as a result of epidemics caused by poor sanitation, but the threat of starvation seems now to have been largely averted [1] (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/as...). The plight of the many affected people and countries prompted a widespread humanitarian response
