Ipoh-born Foo helps ‘Spidey’ come alive
09.13.04 (10:31 pm)   [edit]
Monday September 13, 2004

IPOH: The next time you see Spider-Man swinging effortlessly, hanging from his web or battling villain Doc Ock in the latest Spider-Man movie, take note – a Malaysian is responsible for making it all come to life.

Not many are aware that Ipoh-born Foo Sing-Choong, 34, a senior technical director for Sony Pictures Imageworks, was in charge of the characters’ visual effects on film.

“Basically, I supervise the overall look and shading of characters like Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus so that they blend realistically in the background, by using computer graphics.

“In the first movie, I was only responsible for the look of Spider-Man,” the former SMK Poi Lam student modestly said here yesterday.

Foo, who is based in Los Angeles, is back home with his parents here for four days since Saturday.

Since joining the industry in 1997, he has worked on movies like Men in Black 2 and contributed to the research and development of The Polar Express.

A graduate of Cornell University in New York with two Masters degrees in engineering physics and computer graphics, Foo said he could have chosen to become a Nasa scientist or Silicon Valley engineer.

“But I’ve always loved the idea of working in movies since I was in school.

“My favourite film is Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas because of its creativity and its beautiful score, music, animation and design,” he said.

“My dream is to do the visual effects for an Asian film one day, perhaps even a Malaysian animated feature,” said Foo.
